Cupid Girl, Original Graphite Drawing
When a gallery responded to my art submission that they could tell that I “portray a romantic world,” I was surprised to see it described that way. Yet it is true, I am a romantic. That is truly a big part of my art, romanticizing life and idealizing the decorations of the past - the fashions, the architecture, the curiosity that is not bound by history but freed by imagination.
Remembering this comment about my style feels very fitting for this portrait of a cupid girl. I chose this photo to draw because of her strong posture and determined expression, in addition to probably seeing the corset dress first! Her wings added even a more magical touch, compounded by the clouds and stars I added in the background. After drawing this right around Valentine’s Day, I felt it was the perfect nod to the holiday where romance itself is a celebrity. This girl is almost more of a type of allegory to Valentine’s Day then she is really being Cupid!
I hope that you find wonder, love, and strength from this portrait.
